I love "The Collector"
I started reading Fowles with his "The Magus" and it really shook me back then, I re-read many times since, and as I change with age-so does my reading of the book.
Also "The French Lieutenant's Woman"
But "The Collector" stays my favorite. I need to think why.
Maybe-off the top of my head- because the author is more compassionate.
He knows, Fowles I mean, that he's a snob, and acknowledges it, and mocks himself too, and tries to be less of a snob, etcetera.
But in "The Collector" he's the least snobbish and the most compassionate.
It's his first book, if my memory serves me right?

Wow, this post had an impact on me. I’ve subscribed to Politics is Personal and look forward to listening to Indian classical music (for the first time) and reading The Collector.
Loved this powerful story! What a hero standing up and saving your mum and sister. “I’ve grown in so many ways that it didn’t really feel like a victory any more. It was just something I had to do.” And you did it. The Collector is a disturbing story but it also is a masterpiece!
I really enjoyed this book when I read it in college. This was such a personal story for you, and I feel grateful I got to read it. Thanks for sharing it!

I'll think some more. Thank you for this post.
Please make sure to let me know when you figure out the 'why'

This three would be a good start:

and Nikhil Banerjee: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrrogF-lLTA&t=5142s
Will check them out! Thanks
Wow, what a tribute. One of the best BTMU I’ve read. I was in awe of “The Magus,” but have yet to read this one. Must correct that. Thank you!

Profoundly disturbing, The Collector is one of my favourite books. Superb.
All late teenage favourites of mine, when I was at my arrogant worst!
